DUNAJEC RIVER GORGE AND NIEDZICA CASTLE
Niedzica Castle, Dunajec Dam, rafting on Dunajec River
Duration: 7-8 hours
For the adventurous and sports minded, a gentle raft trip down the Dunajec River through the Pieniny Gorge and along the Polish-Slovak border is one of the greatest tourist attractions in Poland. A mix of conifers and deciduous trees display a lovely pattern of color in any season. For many centuries, the Dunajec valley served as an important trade route to Hungary, which explains the construction of protective Czorsztyn Castle (13th century) and Niedzica Castle (14th century) at strategic points in the valley. The Czorsztyn Castle was destroyed in a peasant uprising, but has been partially restored and its ruins make for an interesting adventure, while the Niedzica Gothic/Renaissance Castle is well preserved and houses an excellent museum. Our tour will begin at Niedzica Castle, with a comfortable stroll to the Dunajec Dam. The raft trip will begin in Sromowce Nizne and will end in Szczawnica, 15 km later, and will last 2-3 hours. There are some excellent views of the high summits of Trzy Korony and Mt. Sokolica.
